All newborns must be kept warm; as soon as possible, they should be carefully dried and placed on their mother’s stomach. Once the umbilical chord has been clamped and severed and their breathing is okay, they should be placed on their mother’s chest skin-to-skin until the breastfeed has been given. It is not advisable to bathe them immediately.

Most newborns will breathe normally once they’ve dried completely. Help is needed for those who are unable to start breathing on their own; using a bag and mask for ventilation will typically help them restart.

Breast milk provides preterm babies with the optimum nutrients, just like it does for full-term babies. Breastfeeding should begin as soon as a baby is born.
